Black Friday: Great Savings or Spending Trap?

Black Friday is the annual meeting place for monster promotions. This is an unmissable event for consumers who want to make big savings. However, is it really a good way to save money, or is it more of an invitation to reckless spending? Syndic.ca offers you its best advice on the subject.

While many insist that these are commercial methods to insist that people get useless things, this should not mean missing out on a good deal. After all, if you had already planned to buy a television or a new phone, it would be a shame not to save for a product you really need.

However, you should know that some stores are trying to get rid of obsolete items by selling, for example, their collection of coats from last year. Before going on a sale hunt, it is therefore better to target products that fill a real gap. Not to mention, of course, comparing prices and checking whether they are indeed advantageous.

It is easy to fall into the trap of a discount that seems attractive at first sight. But rest assured, there are laws in the province that protect only consumers if marketing rules are not respected. It is illegal to claim that a product is on sale if it is not. To denounce this type of practice, simply contact the Office de la protection du consommateur du Québec.

Obviously, that does not mean there aren’t deals out there because there are. However, customers need to be aware and everyone should do their research and make sure they are paying the right price rather than the perceived savings. The difference between Boxing Day sales is that retailers are looking to get rid of existing inventory so there might be better discounts.

Feel free to negotiate the price you will pay by comparing the same item at other merchants. This may be a relevant argument to sellers who will try their best to beat the price of the competition.

A good advice could be to make a list and check it twice. Make sure you have a solid plan for Black Friday/Cyber Moday. This means listing things you were already planning to buy such as Christmas gifts or stuff for the home. Note down their pre-sale prices so you can start shopping knowing exactly how much you’ll save by buying these items.

Finally, it is also ironic to note that the day without purchase coincides with the last Friday in November. This may be an opportunity to reflect on your habits and your social role as a consumer.
